Pregnancy, Labor and Birth during COVID-19

Pregnancy photo 2Are You Currently Pregnant during COVID-19?

COVID-19 in Brevard during your pregnancy or after delivery can be a lot to take in during this time.  Please rest assured that hospitals and pediatric offices are being extremely careful to sanitize and make your experience safe.

Upon recently experiencing my first VIRTUAL BIRTH at Cape Canaveral Hospital, I can assure you that I was able to support, advocate and comfort my clients during their labor and delivery. I was able to provide everything I normally provide, with the exception of holding my client.  Dad had that completely under control.  He was very patient, asked me questions, and loved her completely.  The nurses and Midwife were very helpful in assisting me with my role as a DOULA.

My clients decided to use their cell phone as their screen so that they could “carry me around” the hospital for continued support and comfort measures.  I was able to see when mom needed either: a rest, position change, to be hydrated, empty her bladder, a wash cloth, a fan,  a hot pack, pressure holds on her hip & sacrum, and much more.  I explained the heart rate screen to the clients, and when to notify me if they change.  Mom wanted her mother to join her in her birth; so I contacted mom via cell phone and invited her to our Zoom virtual birth. It was beautiful to hear and see them converse.  It was a joy to have my clients mom, grandmother and father there with her during her memorable birth.

During the labor and birth, I was able to capture 50+ photos of my clients, later to crop and adjust the lighting.  It was like I was in the room.  Baby is healthy and home.  Mom is nursing wonderfully, though is tired from lack of sleep; as every new mom is.

I encourage current pregnant moms to NOT give up their hopes and dreams to have a support and comfort doula with them during COVID-19.  It will make a world of difference with your experience and memories.  My fellow doulas and I have contact with doctors, midwives, and hospital staff to create a support team both inside and outside of the hospital.

May all the expectant and new mother’s in Brevard be comforted and  supported during this time.  You may reach out to me for questions and support any time.
